Saidabad Surface Water Treatment Plant, Bangladesh

Saidabad Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) is presently the major surface water treatment
plant in Dhaka, Bangladesh. With a reported capacity of 450,000 m3/d the plant
serves more than 230,000 connections. The raw water is drawn from the Sitalakhya River via
the DND canal. High Ammonia levels of upto 15 NH4-N/l are recorded through out this canal. Hybrid
growth biological pre-treatment systems with adequate aeration is implemented to reduce the effect of high Ammonia concentration. The primary and seconday treatment is done through
coagulation, clarification and filteration along with pre and post chlorination. 14000 kg/d
of sludge is thickened and pumped to the sludge drying beds.
